Airports & Heli-pads

Fort Simpson is served by two airports and one helicopter service.  There is a landing strip at Simpson Air on Fort Simpson Island.  The other airport is about 25 minutes out of Fort Simpson on this side of the ferry.  In between seasons when there is no ferry and no ice road, Great Slave Helicopters will get you back and forth across the river.

Each fall before the ferry closes for the season, many residents park a vehicle on the other side of the river (mainland) in case they need to leave the island for some reason.  Often, people can walk across the river before the ice road is completed to allow for vehicle traffic.

The Fort Simpson Island Water Aerodrome is open from June to October for float planes.
