Dene Leader Opposes Devolution

Devolution talks keep surfacing, and did so again at NWT Days in Ottawa.  Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus opposes the Devolution process.

“Who gave them a mandate?  When did they go to the NWT population who they represent?   Because they don’t represent the aboriginal population.  We represent ourselves.  When did they get the O-K from the MLA’s?  They haven’t.  If it’s the cabinet that’s deciding then that’s five or six people deciding for the people in the NWT.  When did people give them the authority to decide for them?”

Erasmus said he was never invited to Ottawa this week  to be at the table for devolution talks.

Devolution is poised to take effect in April, 2014.
