Economic Opportunities Strategy Update – May 30, 2013

The NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy (EOS) Advisory Panel has completed and delivered it’s What We Heard Report and Recommendations to the project’s Governance Committee.  You can read or download the Panel’s report from  Read the official news release and backgrounder.

A formal transmittal of the report took place in a media conference hosted by the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, David Ramsay this (Thursday) afternoon at the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife.

In his remarks to the media Minister Ramsay reiterated that the Panel’s report is a critical element of the collective objective to create a strategy that can be implemented at the grassroots of our economy: “It represents the knowledge and experience of the people that live and work in our Territory – who invest and participate directly and indirectly in our community economies every day by going to work, raising their families, buoying groceries and so on…”

Representing the Economic Opportunities Strategy Governance Committee, the Past President of the NWT Chamber of Commerce Hughie Graham highlighted the ongoing commitment to advance the EOS initiative in partnership:  “As much as our Committee has brought the interests of Government, and business together – it is the work of the Advisory Panel that has extended the partnered approach on this project to our Territory’s many leaders, stakeholders, organizations and residents.”

Following the news conference, Minister Ramsay tabled the Panel’s report in the Assembly highlighting several overarching messages that the Advisory Panel has heard in their engagements:  People are essential – we cannot advance our economy without a growing healthy population;  Our resources – including our people – are largely unrealized; Economic opportunities and development must be considered according to the benefits that will be provided to the NWT and its people; and We must build our economy from the ground up – using the local entrepreneurs and community -based businesses that provide the sustainability and growth of our community economies.
