Ferry Advocacy Renewed

The Fort Simpson Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that we have renewed our advocacy to have the hours of service at the MV Laffery extended.

Last month Nahendeh MLA Shane Thompson delivered a package to Wally Schumann, the Minister of Transportation’s, office on behalf of the Chamber. The package included a letter from our President Kirby Groat alerting Minister Schumann to the lobbying the Chamber did last summer to have the Department of Transportation extend the hours of service at the MV Lafferty by two hours every morning. We have asked Minister Schumann to make our request a reality in time for the start of the 2016 ferry season.

Due to the number of elections that have taken place since the Chamber started this campaign, we sought out and obtained letters of support from the new village council, MLA Shane Thompson and the Fort Simpson Metis Nation. Those letters were included in our package to Minister Schumann along with a copy of last year’s petition and our original letters of support from local governments.

The Chamber is committed to working with the Department of Transportation to get the ferry hours extended so the ferry will run from 6 a.m. to midnight instead of the current 8 a.m. to midnight. We made it clear that there is no support for an afternoon break in service to offset the new hours. The Chamber has argued from the outset, that the increase of two hours will benefit local businesses and residents as well as government departments.
