New GNWT Electronics Recycling Regulations

On Aug 25, 2015 the Government of the Northwest Territories passed the attached Electronics Recycling Regulations (attached) under which it will be launching a territory-wide Electronics Recycling Program on Feb 1, 2016. Please note that on February 1, 2016:

  1. Licensed recycling depots will begin collecting used electronics throughout the NWT.
  2. All electronics distributors (any person selling, distributing or manufacturing electronics) in the NWT must collect environmental handling surcharges on new electronics (see the Regulations’ appendix for a list of designated electronics and surcharges).  These surcharges will be remitted to the Environment Fund and will be used to pay for the Electronics Recycling Program.

Program details are being refined in preparation for the February launch and a plain language summary of the Regulations and an overview of the Electronics Program will be distributed shortly. Additional information will also be sent to distributors regarding their obligation to register under the program and when the registration process will open. Closer to the launch of the program, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) will be reaching out to residents through a variety of media to inform them of the new fees on electronics and recycling opportunities in their communities, and supporting outreach materials will be distributed broadly (e.g., posters, fact sheets).
