Northern Food Costs In The News

NWT News/North reported on April 15, 2013 that a head of romaine lettuce in Paulatuk was priced at $11.  When questioned, the price was reduced to $8.  The same product in Yellowknife would sell for approximately $2.

Nutrition North Canada is a retail subsidy program focused on increasing access to perishable healthy food in isolated northern communities. Their “job” is to ensure healthy food is available in the north for a reasonable price.  Visit Nutrition North Canada to learn more.

Did you know that a potato farm in Norman Wells manages to sell its produce locally for less than what it is shipped in for? Commercial greenhouses can be established in the north, and the Northern Farm Training Institute is helping that become a reality.
