NWT – Alberta Bilateral Water Agreement

The NWT-Alberta Bilateral Water Agreement has been in the works for 16 years.  Finally, it has moved forward enough to project a firm agreement by late spring of 2013.  There is still some parts of the agreement to complete, but in principle there is agreement.

“Erin Kelly, technical advisor for the NWT negotiating team said both Alberta and the NWT have reached agreement on certain pieces of the deal, which insist that the agreement must support healthy ecosystems, respect Aboriginal and treaty rights, be adaptable to change over the long-term and help the NWT stay informed about upstream development before it happens.”
