Upgraded Cell Service For Fort Simpson

Prompted by the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission, or CRTC, NorthwesTel released an ambitious modernization plan in July 2012, calling for a $270 million infrastructure investment that would bring high-speed Internet and advanced wireless services to all of northern Canada. Under the proposal submitted to the CRTC, consumers and businesses in 96 communities – from northern BC to Baffin Island – would have received access to next generation 3G/4G wireless and wireless broadband services, the ability to use the latest handsets, smartphones and tablets, as well as high-speed Internet even in the smallest hamlet.

The Fort Simpson Chamber of Commerce recognized the need for an upgrade in cellular service for the Village of Fort Simpson, including “the hill”.  CDMA service in the village (on the island) and part of the hill existed, but in areas like Wild Rose Acres, 4 Mile Access, the airport and beyond was hit-and-miss or non-existent.  The empty tower sitting beyond our cell service was doing nothing.

In 2012, the Fort Simpson Chamber of Commerce approached Northwestel at a Northwest Territories Chamber meeting in Yellowknife to upgrade our service and put in additional coverage for the area.  Fast forward to December 11, 2012, and Nortwestel announces upgraded service for Fort Simpson.  You can find the Northwestel Press Release here.

Not only are we getting an upgrade of service to 3G HSPA, we are also getting the “addition of a new tower”.  The press release states:  “…. 3G HSPA wireless service with upgrades that will allow residents and tourists to use the latest wireless devices, tablets and smartphones including the Apple iPhone5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Optimus G.”

NorthwesTel will be at the Northern Store December 17th and 18th with a large variety of phones for the villagers to choose from.
